Division Board Representative

Eugene Kowch
University of Calgary

Eugene Kowch holds a Ph.D. in Education Administration from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada, and he is a tenured Associate Professor of Education Technology and Leadership in the Graduate Division of the Faculty of Education at the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada). As a board Representative for Systemic change, he offers the academic and professional experience to integrate Systemic Change thinking with AECT strategic thinking and innovative work around the world. AECT could grow with systemic change, and vice versa. Dr. Kowch's experience in organization development is an asset to growing service for members and the community.

He has served on the Future Minds TCT (Board), and as Communications Officer for the Division of Systemic Change. His work on the AECT strategic plan and involvement in AECT leadership institutes has him thinking a lot about returning AECT to becoming the premiere professional society or education technologists and education systems worldwide. Indeed, his publications and research are showing that with the renewing AECT identity and great folks working with AECT, it is the educational technologist who should lead all levels of next generation education in the information age. He means that.  

Currently, Dr. Kowch's research focuses on the complexity and leadership of education technology involved institutions.  Dr. Kowch and his many graduate students bridge the fields of education policy, administration, leadership, and education technology to study, interpret and design organizations for the information age.

These are future leaders with a multidisciplinary capablity to inform the environment around education technology domain work so that new education systems are not only tech-savvy, but recognized as part of our field as well.

His work focuses on organizational change for the information age, offering professional organizations, large supra systems (government), school districts and schools guides for change.

Dr. Kowch has 15 years experience as an industry executive help him understand complex contexts where and how educational technologists and technologist associations can make a difference. He has another 15 years experience as a K-12 teacher, principal and deputy superintendent of education add to his passion to help new leaders and learners toward a better tomorrow.

Dr. Kowch has several national and local research awards for involving graduate students and practitioners in his studies. Eugene has been an AECT member for many years in the Management and Training Divisions, and in the Systemic Change Division where he is now Communications Officer (elect). His work with FutureMinds and teaching advanced instructional design and leadership courses at the Master’s and doctoral level has gleaned him several service and teaching / supervision awards and nominations. He provides government, university faculties and industry with organizational development research, analysis and interventions on a regular basis.
