Purpose of the Crystal Award

To recognize innovative and outstanding multimedia-based distance learning courses and projects.

Sponsored by the Division of Distance Learning (DDL) of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and Information Age Publishers.

Categories

  • Distance Learning Courses

    Online, CD-ROM/DVD or video-based courses.

    These can be credit or non-credit courses in which the students are remote or at a distance from one another. Delivery can be either synchronous or asynchronous, utilizing a variety of media, including (but not necessarily limited to) online, CD-ROM/DVD and video. Entries must have instruction within the program, have identified students, and use an instructor or moderator as a component of the delivery. For online courses or courses with an online component, URL listings must include guest login/password for Crystal Award judges.
     
  • Distance Learning Projects

    Single modules, lessons, workshops, something less than an entire course

    These can be programs or projects that are used as lessons or individual components of a course, professional development workshops, training modules, learning objects or other projects that constitute less than an entire course. Projects may consist of various media, including but not limited to videocassettes, computer software, CD-ROM/DVD, packaged multimedia, manipulatives, web-based applications or other delivery methods. All online components of a project must include URL listings must include guest login/password for Crystal Award judges.
Eligibility

Limited to a distance learning projects that are instructional in nature, are designed for any age level, and have been completed after January 1, 2009. Entrant must warrant that all copyrights employed in the projects have been purchased or acquired by the individual or producing agency. Applications without appropriate copyright will not be considered for an award. An entry may only be submitted to one category.

Judging


Entries will be judged by the DDL Crystal Award Committee and/or its representatives.

Judging Criteria


Entries in each category will be judged using the following criteria:
  • Innovative and creative use of the medium
  • Instructional value and relevance
  • Instructional strategy
  • Quality of production
  • Evidence of successful utilization and implementation;
  • Evidence of achievement of goals and objectives.
  • Note: Judges may elect not to make awards in either or both categories.

    All entries must be received no later than May 9th, 2010 by:

    Entry Information

    An authorized program distributor or producer should submit:
    1. A completed entry form.
    2. If the project is video-based: Four CD-ROMs or DVDs of the project.
    3. Four sets of all printed project components including documentation (if appropriate).
    4. Two page write up, including; an overview, goals, and evaluation.


    5. Guest access information to course
    Awards Presentation
    The Awards will be presented at the AECT Convention.

    ECT FOUNDATION

    The ECT Foundation is the non-profit foundation of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) and was established to carry out the purposes and programs of AECT that are charitable and educational in nature.
