EDTECH Island and C.A.V.E Island SecondLife Contributions
Considered for National Educational Technology Plan!

At one of several presentations hosted on EdTech Island in 2008, students and visitors watch and listen as Lisa Dawley and guest David Gibson discuss Learning Theory Frameworks at EdTech Island in SL.Dr. Lisa Dawley, Professor & Chair of the Department of Educational Technology at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, and an AECT Virtual Worlds Committee leader, reported this week that BSU EDTECH and C.A.V.E. Islands in Second Life (SL) are being considered as contributors for the the next National Educational Technology Plan. Lisa Dawley, a.k.a. Mali Young in SL, and her colleagues have been actively researching Second Life and other virtual worlds and gaming as an educational tool for over four years. Dr. Dawley had forwarded the VWC a notice this week stating "the US Dept. of Education is collecting exemplar cases of Edtech for the new release of the National Educational Technology Plan." Dr. Dawley has also requested that as supporter's of the work BSU is doing with and in virtual worlds such as SL, to please visit the federal website:https://edtechfuture.org/?page_id=12521. At the website, you will be able to provide a rating related to the work that is being done at both C.A.V.E. Island and EdTech Island in SL.

Thanks to the long-time support of Dr. Dawley and other contributors of EDTECH and C.A.V.E. Islands, AECT members and affiliates can utilize the islands for virtual presentations, meetings, and teaching and training in SL. Dr. Dawley has been an active member and presenter with AECT for 4 plus years, and continues to support the organization in multiple ways, including providing EDTECH and C.A.V.E. Islands as educational spaces in SL and being a active member of the AECT Virtual Worlds Committee (VWC).

Congratulations Dr. Dawley, to you and your faculty who continually strive to make a difference to bridge the digital divide with technology in education!

A Note of Thanks to All for the Success of 2009 AECT-SL Convention Events

The Virtual/Live Ribbon Cutting at the 2009 Conference in Louisville

To VWC Members - From Tom Atkinson

I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their wonderful contributions to the AECT_SL events for the conference. Based on my observations and the response of others, it was a HUGE success. We achieved all of the planned objectives. We developed many new contacts during the demo session on Thursday. While Chris held down the fort at the demo site, Mark and I handed out fliers throughout the hallways and meeting rooms to attract participants to the ceremony. We had about forty individuals attending what was truly a momentous ribbon-cutting event. Phil took pictures in RL and hopefully will share them soon. On Friday, Mark and I shared Bill's video with the Past Presidents, who were very complimentary of our efforts. At the VWC meeting on Friday morning, we welcomed new members and discussed our project objectives. New directions for the project will be defined in a proposal to the AECT Board that includes publications, events, and other virtual world opportunities. More details will follow at our next VWC meeting later in November.

The AECT Virtual World Committee (VWC) hosted several successful Events on C.A.V.E. Island, October 29th and 30th, during the 2009. Events included virtual worlds presentations discussing research and teaching and other educational technology techniques within virtual worlds. VWC will continue to present guided tours of the island, presentations and even training events for new users to SL and other virtual worlds. If you would like to keep up with the events on CAVE Island, consider becoming a AECT SL member, so you to can receive announcements for the future virtual activities happening on the island. Feeling spontaneous? Teleport to: http://slurl.com/secondlife/CAVE/161/61/25/ to see a schedule for current and future events that the VWC is hosting.

New AECT Space is Shaping UP! July 23, 2009

Construction, cont... This past week has been quite eventful for AECT in SecondLife. The VWC now has a well established presence at its new homebase. While, we are still keeping island name and its location undercover, we can show you a couple of pictures of some of the new spaces that will be available for AECT members current, and future to visit.

There will be a large greeting area for all visitors to easily navigate the island; teleport stations are also located in several public areas for convienence quick access to several locations about the parcel. There will be a few different speaking venues in doors and out. And the division and committe members will have their own private meeting areas available for meeting sessions.

AECT SL Under New Construction - July 13, 2009

For the past 2 months, the Virtual World Committee (VWC) has been constructing a variety of new meeting spaces for AECT in Second Life. While the new location has not been officially publicized, it remains geographically close to previous educational space where we were once located. AECT will be sharing its home with several other educational organizations, including the ITC Library. As part of the new design of our future location, all AECT Divisions and groups will have a home office or meeting space when they are visiting inworld. The VWC will be contacting the Division Communication Officers in the coming weeks, to establish the needs and desires for their own personalized space.

The new AECT SLhome is scheduled to be unveiled during the AECT 2009 Convention later this year. As always, part of our reasoning for this SL gathering place is to network and gain new and stronger memberships both in SL and in the real world. The new island will provide membership information for visitors seeking to be a part of this great community and membership of people.

Also, a new Twitter feed will be added to the site in the coming days, so please stay tuned for more information on that advancement.

If you would like to participate in the membership process in SL, please contact Cheryl Comstock, Cheryl.Comstock@cccs.edu or in SL: Ize Mesmer.

If you have suggestions or would like to participate on the VWC committee, contact Tom Atkinson at Atkinson@mail.ucf.edu, or in SL: Professor Tomsen.
