2009 AECT International Convention
Integrative Approaches: Meeting Challenges

The AECT 2009 Convention was a great success and we now look forward to the 2010 convention, 'Cyber Change: Learning In Our Connected World' to be held in Anaheim, CA, October 27-30, 2010. Look for the 2010 Call for Proposal to be open December 15, 2009. MyAECT will be remain for a few more weeks and if you still need a copy of convention registration receipt, click here to login.

Having said that, we want to make a few comments about AECT 2009 and thank our three keynote speakers, Peter Goodyear, Daphne Rainey, and Andrei Podolskij. Peter’s talk about learning through inquiry and teaching as design, resonated with many of those in attendance and sparked ongoing discussion throughout the conference. Daphne’s overview of NSF programs, and cyberlearning in particular, also generated many subsequent discussions, and was a very nice introduction to the theme for the 2010 conference. Andrei’s presentation on the developmental dimensions of instructional design was a strong and well-formulated reminder of the need to take into account human development when planning and implementing learning and instruction, and his closing example made the need to keep developmental psychology linked to instructional planning quite clear. We also had many outstanding presidential sessions, integrative panels and concurrent sessions.

AECT Events in SecondLife

A Note of Thanks to All for the Success of 2009 AECT-SL Convention Events

The Virtual/Live Ribbon Cutting at the 2009 Conference in Louisville

To VWC Members - From Tom Atkinson

I would like to sincerely thank everyone for their wonderful contributions to the AECT_SL events for the conference. Based on my observations and the response of others, it was a HUGE success. We achieved all of the planned objectives. We developed many new contacts during the demo session on Thursday. While Chris held down the fort at the demo site, Mark and I handed out fliers throughout the hallways and meeting rooms to attract participants to the ceremony. We had about forty individuals attending what was truly a momentous ribbon-cutting event. Phil took pictures in RL and hopefully will share them soon. On Friday, Mark and I shared Bill's video with the Past Presidents, who were very complimentary of our efforts. At the VWC meeting on Friday morning, we welcomed new members and discussed our project objectives. New directions for the project will be defined in a proposal to the AECT Board that includes publications, events, and other virtual world opportunities. More details will follow at our next VWC meeting later in November.

The AECT Virtual World Committee (VWC) hosted several successful Events on C.A.V.E. Island, October 29th and 30th, during the 2009. Events included virtual worlds presentations discussing research and teaching and other educational technology techniques within virtual worlds. VWC will continue to present guided tours of the island, presentations and even training events for new users to SL and other virtual worlds. If you would like to keep up with the events on CAVE Island, consider becoming a AECT SL member, so you to can receive announcements for the future virtual activities happening on the island. Feeling spontaneous? Teleport to: http://slurl.com/secondlife/CAVE/161/61/25/ to see a schedule for current and future events that the VWC is hosting.

The VWC continues to work with AECT Division Affiliates to develop the personal division meeting spaces on C.A.V.E. Island. There are still a few division areas in need of furnishing and decorating and we are still taking requests. Contact your Division Communication affiliate today, and share your ideas for your division's personal in-world meeting space. The Division Communications officers can communicate your groups design ideas and the VWC will take care of the rest!

Come lighten your day, and join us and your colleagues for a new and interesting way to teach and learn in our new space! To get your name added to the in-world membership registry, contact Tom Atkinson, our Project Manager at, atkinson@mail.ucf.edu . Each time we post an in-world event, you will be sent an invitation in-world and an email notice informing you of when and where to join AECT on CAVE Island.

Be sure to follow AECT_SL on Twitter, and see more about SL AECT's SecondLife Home Page.
