"The ability to create accessible media has grown from a niche skill to absolutely essential to many instructional design contexts, and the demand for instructional designers who can address accessibility is only growing.  This workshop will help you to remediate and create instructional media with accessibility in mind.  We will look at why we want to make instructional media accessible, some of the main design features and choices that limit the accessibility of media, and some practical approaches to avoiding and addressing these features.  We will also discuss options for handling media that cannot be readily made accessible.


Instructional media is vital to both business and educational contexts, and current technology has allowed a wider audience of consumers and students to have these materials at their fingertips.  Unfortunately, accessibility has often been an afterthought in the design of instructional media, limiting the access to these materials of individuals with disabilities.  In the past, it was adequate to provide “reasonable” accommodations.  In the time of paper media, when everyone had to wait for materials, an accommodation which required someone to wait for materials was fair.  Today, when we can learn anywhere at any time, making someone wait for the materials everyone else can already access is no longer appropriate, and it may be illegal.  In addition to doing what is legal, designing for accessibility means creating better materials for a wide range of learners.  For example, 83% of students who were eligible to receive accommodations for learning disabilities do not receive them in higher education, and designing for accessibility helps to reach this under-served population (National Center for Learning Disabilities, 2014).


There are a number of laws, guidelines, and policies regarding ADA compliance and making materials accessible, and it would be impossible to cover them all in a single workshop.  We will focus on some of the main features of web accessibility identified in WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) 2.0 and the main features of text documents, spreadsheets, images, and other media that can make them more or less accessible (Henry, 2012).  Many of the features that make a document or website inaccessible are difficult to see at first glance, and we will look at some of the best free tools and features of common software that can allow you to more easily identify issues with accessibility.  These will include identifying issues with color choices, font and formatting choices, document organization, and alternate text (or alt text).


We will work with real instructional media objects to make them accessible, using two different approaches.  Often, we have existing media that is not accessible.  This will require identifying the main features that make the media inaccessible, determining if it is practical to correct the media in the time available, making the corrections, then checking the corrections.  Alternatively, if we are creating new instructional media, incorporating design approaches and accessibility throughout the process can save time in avoiding needing to make changes later.  It is important to remember throughout this process that we are improving the accessibility of media, not necessarily making it accessible forever for everyone.  As technology changes, so will what it means to make media accessible.  


As you review media, you will inevitably find items that simply cannot be remediated.  Either there is not enough time to make the material accessible or the changes needed are so extensive that it is not worth retaining long term.  We will discuss when it is appropriate to continue to use these types of materials, how they might be used, and when they need to be removed.  This can be a difficult process, particularly if the instructional media took a long time to develop, was recently made, or is a cornerstone of a course or program.  Recognizing the work that went into the original materials and saving as much as possible for future use can help make the transition easier for you or whoever created the materials.


Making your media accessible can be a daunting process, but during this workshop, you will learn how to make it simpler, through practical steps and preparing for both the problem-solving and emotional challenges of the process.  At the end of the workshop, you will have examples and an actual, accessible media product you can take with you, along with easy-to-use tools for checking accessibility.
