Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Celebrates 2024 Award Recipients for Outstanding Contributions to the Field

The Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) is honored to announce the recipients of three prestigious awards in recognition of their exceptional contributions to the fields of learning design, instructional technology, and educational communication. Each of these individuals exemplifies the highest standards of academic and professional achievement within the AECT community. 

This year’s distinguished honorees include Dr. Punya Mishra, Dr. Peggy Ertmer, Dr. Krista Glazewski, Dr. Adrie Koehler, Dr. Jill Stefaniak, and Dr. Hengtao Tang. Their dedication to research, publication, and service has left a lasting impact on the field and has inspired educators, researchers, and practitioners worldwide. 

 

2024 David H. Jonassen Excellence in Research Award 

Recipient: Dr. Punya Mishra 

Dr. Punya Mishra, Director of Innovative Learning Futures, Learning Engineering Institute and Professor, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, is recognized with the David H. Jonassen Excellence in Research Award for his outstanding contributions to the field of learning design and technology. Dr. Mishra’s pioneering work on pedagogical frameworks produced the well-known TPACK model, and his collaborations investigating creativity and learning foster innovative research that bridges theory and practice. AECT extends its appreciation to Dr. Curt Bonk and Dr. Tom Reeves, whose support and nomination efforts were instrumental in this recognition. 

 

2024 James W. Brown Publication Award 

Recipients: Dr. Peggy Ertmer, Dr. Krista Glazewski, Dr. Adrie Koehler, and Dr. Jill Stefaniak 

The team of Dr. Peggy Ertmer, Professor Emerita at Purdue University in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Krista Glazewski, Executive Director, Friday Institute, and Associate Dean for Translational Research at North Carolina State University, Dr. Adrie Koehler, Associate Professor in Learning Design and Technology at Purdue University, College of Education and Dr. Jill Stefaniak, Associate Professor in the Department of Workforce Education and Instructional Technology at Mary Frances Early College of Education, University of Georgia, is awarded the James W. Brown Publication Award for their seminal work, The ID CaseBook, Sixth Edition. This resource has become a cornerstone in instructional design education, offering rich, open-ended case studies that guide students and professionals through the complexities of real-world instructional challenges. Their work is particularly valued for sparking ethical discussions and preparing instructional designers to address diverse, practical scenarios in the field. 

 

2024 J. Michael Spector Appreciation Award 

Recipient: Dr. Hengtao Tang 

Dr. Hengtao Tang, Associate Professor of Learning Design and Technologies at University of South Carolina, is celebrated with the J. Michael Spector Appreciation Award for their unwavering commitment and service to AECT. Dr. Tang’s exemplary leadership and dedication to advancing the organization’s mission reflect the legacy of Dr. Spector’s contributions. Dr. Tang’s work has strengthened AECT’s community and extended the organization’s impact, fostering growth and engagement. AECT thanks Dr. Tonia Bauer for her nomination, ensuring Dr. Tang’s dedication was recognized with this well-deserved honor.
