Growing Future Leaders: Spotlight on the Addie Kinsinger Leadership Development Internship Program

By AECT Staff posted 14 days ago

At AECT, we believe leadership isn’t just a title, it’s a journey. One of the ways we invest in the future of educational communications and technology is through the Addie Kinsinger Leadership Development Internship Program. Each year, this prestigious program identifies passionate graduate students and new professionals who are ready to step into leadership within AECT and the broader field.

But what truly makes the program special is what happens after selection. The internship program allows participants to transform ambition into action, gaining hands-on leadership experience, growing under the guidance of seasoned mentors, and shaping the future of AECT and the field at large.

A Year of Immersive Growth

Interns in the Addie Kinsinger program aren’t passive observers. From the moment they are selected, they are immersed in meaningful experiences designed to build skills, expand networks, and make tangible contributions to AECT’s future.

At the AECT International Convention, interns participate in a curated leadership development program where they:

  • Attend executive board meetings for a behind-the-scenes look at how a professional association operates.

  • Shadow AECT leaders and staff during key governance events, learning firsthand about organizational decision-making.

  • Assist with high-profile convention activities, including first-timer sessions, general sessions, and the AECT membership meeting.

And the learning doesn’t stop there. Throughout their internship year, each intern:

  • Is paired with a mentor — a current AECT leader — who guides them through personalized leadership development activities.

  • Contributes to a collaborative intern project designed to address real organizational needs within AECT.

  • Is supported by a program coordinator, a former intern, creating a layered network of encouragement and wisdom.

Interns deepen their involvement by attending division meetings, working on strategic initiatives, and helping shape the future of the association they are preparing to lead.

"This is the largest and most close-knit group of interns I’ve worked with," said Nate Turcotte, Internship Program Coordinator of the current intern cohort. "Their commitment to AECT and their drive to see the organization thrive truly stands out. The mentorship and project work they engage in builds real leadership skills they’ll carry forward into their careers."

Why Apply? Intern Voices

Wondering if the Addie Kinsinger Internship is for you? Take it from those who know it best — the interns themselves!

What motivated you to apply for the internship?

"I wanted to deepen both my leadership capacities and scholarly contributions to the field of instructional technology," said Keunjae Kim. "I saw the internship as a way to build long-term, meaningful connections and contribute actively to AECT’s initiatives around inclusive research and emerging technologies."

David Awoyemi added, "I was drawn to the opportunity to grow as a leader within AECT, expand my professional network, and collaborate with passionate scholars and practitioners."

Theresa Huff shared that encouragement from her advisor and the positive experiences of former interns inspired her to apply. "I knew it would be a worthwhile opportunity to build connections and leadership skills."

How has the program shaped your leadership skills or career goals?

"Participating in the internship strengthened my leadership identity and long-term career direction," Keunjae reflected. "Mentorship helped me reflect on the mindset and expectations of a successful scholar."

For Aubrey Rogowski, the internship provided an unexpected bonus: "I’ve received wonderful mentorship and advice that have helped me further my career goals, and I’ve also met seven amazing interns who have become friends and teachers along the way."

Theresa noted, "The program gave me a window of opportunity into the field and a sense of ownership of AECT."

What has been the most valuable part of your experience so far?

Across the board, the interns cited mentorship and collaboration as the highlights.

"Working on real-world projects and designing initiatives to elevate underrepresented voices was deeply meaningful," Keunjae shared.

David emphasized, "The collaborative research project with other interns helped me deepen my research skills and understand teamwork in a professional setting."

Theresa agreed, adding, "Building lifelong relationships with my mentor and other interns has been the most valuable part."

Any advice for future applicants?

"Get involved in AECT early," Aubrey recommended. "Find your fit within the divisions, and don’t be discouraged if you don’t get accepted the first time — apply again!"

Keunjae echoed the importance of preparation: "Know your research and service interests, but stay open to new perspectives. Your voice matters here."

"Come in with a growth mindset and be proactive," David encouraged. "Take full advantage of the mentorship and networking opportunities — it’s a chance to contribute meaningfully and grow."

Theresa concluded, "The relationships alone are worth applying for. It’s hard to even explain how much the internship can offer."
